Tutoring Across Generations: A Teachers Perspective
Tutoring Across Generations: A Teacher's PerspectiveHow can parents and educators use tutoring across generations to learn what works best for each age group? What would it mean to move from learning the basics in a young child to starting to teach the middle and older students in an elementary school? Or what about the first-graders that need to have a few more ideas for vocabulary, while they read for comprehension? While there is not one quick answer, there are several opportunities available that will let parents and educators to create a curriculum that works well for students in different ages.As the first grade students begin to begin writing their own papers, the grades might need to be adjusted to give each age group a slightly different grade, so that the age groups are learning at a different pace. Using both parents and teachers to ask questions and brainstorm new lessons can allow for some creative thinking. Instead of using material from the past, the teacher might cons ider providing a curriculum that is current to each age group. This is a wonderful opportunity to expose the children to different cultures, news, technology, sports, history, poetry, and music. It is easy to create a one-hour lesson plan that features all of these topics. The middle school and high school students might need a more advanced lesson plan, and in that case a review of the past could be a great way to continue the teaching and knowledge that were taught in the age groups that need it most. Teachers could use material that was previously taught in each grade level and offer a review of topics that were covered in a previous lesson. Reviewing old material might also allow the teacher to consider what the children learned that they should be included in future lessons. For the older students, perhaps they need more time in the classroom, or more interaction with the students, such as tutoring. The older students need extra work because they have more complex and challenging assignments. Therefore, tutoring is the perfect solution. The tutor could focus on a few different skills, such as the English reading skill, a math skill, or a learning about geography skill. The other students can still learn with the more basic lessons, but the tutor can give additional help and supervision for each child in the class. With a little bit of thinking, a parent or educator could create a curriculum for a grade level that targets all of the main areas and skills needed in different age groups. For example, a grade five school child would benefit from a math skill that was not introduced in the grade four curriculum. If a grade six child wants more information about chess, then they may benefit from taking more advanced lessons with a math tutor.Another example is that a child in grade six who was used to having time to rest between lessons may want to learn how to complete homework outside of the regular class hours. They can study at home before school or take speci al education classes at home to complete their homework assignments, then leave for school when their parents are not watching. This is a great way to save time, because they can complete their assignments faster and avoid homework fatigue, while at the same time be exposed to different learning styles. Parents and teachers can tailor a lesson plan that is specific to each child. It is not just about having all of the students in the grade level for each age. A teacher or a parent can plan on having a grade seven student that needs extra help with a math skill that would not be included in the grade five curriculum.Learning what works for every grade level is crucial for success in a classroom. Through tutoring across generations, parents and educators can create a curriculum that works for every age group, regardless of what type of child it is that is in the class.

5 Things to do Before Finishing the 8th Grade - TutorNerds
5 Things to do Before Finishing the 8th Grade - TutorNerds 5 things to do before finishing the 8th grade The end of the school year is not far away, and students currently in the eighth grade will face a major change in their academic life next year, they will soon be high school students. 8th graders have to face finals week just like they did in years past but there are some additional things they can do to help them prepare for the summer as well as their impending future as a high school student. Whether working on organizational skills or self-motivation 8th graders can make their lives a lot easier by refining a few important academic skills before they complete the school year. 1. Effective study habits Students entering high school will be expected to have pretty decent study habits. They will need to be able to sit down and start homework assignments on their own, take the initiative to ask questions or get help when needed, work effectively within a group, and so on. There are lots of changes going on in middle school and junior high but ninth grade teachers will expect a certain level of commitment from their students so its a good idea to start looking at study habits now and make any necessary adjustments over the summer. 2. Time management and organization Another thing thats incredibly important for 8th grade students to master is time management and organization. Students might have three hours of studying or homework to complete over the weekend but, if theyâre disorganized, it can take forever. So many students dont get things done on time or miss important deadlines because they lack personal time management skills. To be fair, most adults struggle with time management to some degree so its not to say that young students need to be perfect. Rather, they should set a reasonable goal for improvement and work towards it. Students who have at least some organizational skills tend to not only do better academically but also tend to be happier and more relaxed during this major transition (READ: 10 Reasons Why You Need a Summer Tutor). 3. Becoming a self-starter In the 8th grade teachers will still check up on students on a regular basis and ask if they understand the assignment, if they need any additional help, or if theyre struggling. In contrast, 9th grade teachers will encourage students to be self-starters and take the initiative to ask questions without prompting. If 8th graders have one major goal over the summer it should be to learn how to speak up when they dont understand something. Even if a student is uncomfortable asking a question aloud in class, they should get used to talking to the teacher after class or making an appointment to talk about challenging assignments. 4. Communication with teachers Another really important factor of mastering the 8th grade is learning how to communicate with teachers. For instance, younger students generally say to a teacher I dont get the assignment or this doesnt make sense. Thats a good start because it lets the teacher know the student is struggling but, by high school, students should be able to specifically describe what it is theyâre struggling with. For example, students can ask a question such as I dont understand the concept described on page 23 or I dont understand what specifically sparked (a particular war, revolution, or conflict). Specific questions definitely help the teacher figure out how to explain the difficult passage or concept to the student in detail. 5. Choosing good role models as friends Another thing essential at this age is for students to start choosing friends based on their attitude and goals towards school and life. Most students stay at one high school for four years, so theyll likely have the same classmates this entire time. However, students moving from 8th to 9th grade will have an opportunity to reinvent themselves and make new friends. Classmates who are serious about getting work done, ask for help when needed, and have a positive attitude about school are more likely to encourage their friends to do well and stay on the right track. Everybody struggles from time to time, but the desire to succeed will make a difference in any studentâs life. End the year strong with the help of our private San Diego middle school tutors. Chemistry Books For High School - How to Choose a Book
Chemistry Books For High School - How to Choose a BookWith the vast number of chemistry books available in the market, it is not surprising that parents are unable to choose from the variety of ones they have. The primary reason for this is because they need guidance and advice on choosing the right ones. But in reality, there is not a single book available which can provide you with free information on how to choose the best one from the bunch. This should be pretty clear now. You cannot rely on any book to give you the information you need.In fact, as a parent, you do not even have to rely on the help of your friends or family members. At best, they can make suggestions but at worst, they will be able to give you some very general tips. So, what you need is the direct and personal help of a qualified and experienced online advisor who will take over your homework for you.The role of an online chemistry advisor is very important because he can recommend you the books which you might have not even considered. In other words, you have only to choose a book which is in line with your existing knowledge and professional skills. For example, if you have a science degree, there is no way that you can understand chemistry books for high school level. Instead, you should have a master's degree so that you can understand properly the topics covered in the books.Once you choose a chemistry book that is appropriate to your level, you can have a chat with an online chemist and see whether you can learn anything new or whether you can avail some useful advice and tips. If you are able to get some useful tips, you can then pick the right chemistry book for your child. But as I said earlier, you should get the help of a qualified counselor because you do not have to pay for his time. You can easily locate one from a trusted online website or from any other known resource. But once you do this, you can be assured that you are going to get the assistance that you need. So, as you can see, there is no point in relying on free resources which will just give you practical information. Instead, you need to contact an expert who can give you knowledge and skills to understand more of the subject matter. Therefore, the world of science has not completely forgotten the importance of education which is not very difficult when you use the right resource.
How to Recover from a Disappointing Midterm Grade
How to Recover from a Disappointing Midterm Grade The transition from high school to college is a big one. Anecdotal evidence shows it is not uncommon for new freshmen to struggle with midterm exams. Even if you did well in high school, the new environment, increased academic rigor, and newfound freedom of college can decrease your academic performance. It can be difficult to balance the new experiences and the need to study. If you receive a disappointing grade on a midterm, it may be a warning sign that you need to find your life-school balance in order to recover by the end of the semester. The good news is, it is possible to recover from a disappointing midterm grade. With a little positivity, analysis, and hard work, you can lift yourself out of a poor grade situation. The following tips can help: Dont dwell on your bad midterm grade You earned a bad grade on an important testnow you need to accept it and move on. Dont waste time dwelling on your midterm grade; instead, work to fix the problem going forward. You can take an evening to drown your disappointment in a pint of Ben and Jerrys, but after that, focus on recovering from your subpar grade. Dont let this setback deter you from earning good grades. Identify problem subject areas To move forward, youll need to have a plan. The first thing you need to do is figure out what you need help with specifically. What particular content areas gave you trouble? Were you underprepared, or did you mistakenly think you understood the information? Did you make careless mistakes? Do you need help with time management or study skills? A tool that you may find helpful for this is an exam wrapper. Exam wrappers are questionnaires that help you identify problem areas on exams and identify ways you can improve your preparation for the next one. For example, if you received a C- on your college algebra midterm, an exam wrapper could help you identify that quadratic equations and augmented matrices are the concepts in which you are weakest. Furthermore, taking college algebra diagnostic tests or practice exams could provide additional insight (and extra practice) into your academic strengths and weaknesses. Seek academic help Dont be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you do poorly on your midterm, you might want to make an appointment to see your professor. He or she can help you further identify your problem areas and can help explain the concepts that you do not understand. In addition, he or she may also suggest avenues for bringing up your grade, whether its an extra paper or an extra credit project. Is your chemistry grade less than ideal? You may also want to seek out chemistry tutors who can provide individualized attention you may not receive in a college lecture hall. Dont be afraid to seek out a study group or tutorials, as well. Prioritize your tasks and manage your time Figure out what you need to do to improve your gradethen do it. Although you should take time to eat, sleep, and otherwise take care of yourself, remember that you still have a relatively short period of time to buckle down and improve your grade before the semester ends. Evaluate your schedule and other commitments, and prioritize accordingly in order to reach your goal. Dont give up Bombing a midterm is not the end of the world. As F. Scott Fitzgerald said, Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat. There are always opportunities to learn from and improve on a bad grade. The second half of the term is a very short amount of time in the grand scheme of things. Keep at ityou can do it! Even though you may have fallen short on your midterm, there is still time to recover. Believe it or not, this is a common occurrence, and it is important to move forward confidently. Accept what happened, figure out what you need help with, manage your remaining time, and stay focused through the end of the semester. A poor grade can help you develop necessary time management skills and lead to you find your balance between your social life and academic responsibilities.
Career Advice for the Young Introvert - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Career Advice for the Young Introvert - Introvert Whisperer Career Advice for the Young Introvert Guest Author September 28, 2015 Career Development, Self-Promotion 2 responses Being nervous when entering a new job or the workforce, in general, is normal, and totally fine. If you donât quite know where youâre going yet, here are a few things to know. Actions speak louder than words. Weâve all heard this once, twice, a thousand times, but it holds truth. Your actions will always speak louder than your words, so make them count. When it comes to your career, what you do is more important than what you say, since following through with a plan will build more trust than consistently saying youâll do something. You do not have to constantly ask questions, or give updates on where you are. While it may be a good habit to get into, when your work is getting done without being asked, your reputation will build itself. Basically, to make a lasting impression you donât have to speak above the crowd. Silence does not equal compliance. Simple enough, but silence can sometimes be mistaken for a âyesâ in the workplace, and itâs important to make sure your opinion and voice are heard. Being able to have a voice in your workplace gives employees the ability to help fix conflict and make the work environment more inviting. It also gives the opportunity for feedback, which is important for self-growth. When you feel like youâre being unheard or ignored, your work or motivation can be negatively impacted. To succeed in your career, youâll have to be able to explain your point of view and let others know, and you owe it to yourself to make sure youâre clear on what you want or why your idea is a good one. Youâre not a stereotype of the creepy. What I mean is, donât let the idea that youâre antisocial keep you from a social job. While working from home seems like an introverts dream, you do not have to adhere to that stereotype, and you donât have to let anyone box you in like that. Being shy and quiet are related to both introverts and âcreepyâ people, not all suffer from social anxiety or shyness. In fact, some of the best jobs for introverts include Critical Care Nurses, Criminologists, and Interpreters and Translators. Introverts have characteristics of being observant, collected, and decisive, making it easy for us to thrive in social environments just as well as our extroverted counterparts. Being âshyâ can be used to your advantage. So youâre quiet. So you donât actively engage seek out conversation. So what? Being shy is said to make people more approachable, or easier to talk to because you donât come off as threatening. If youâre shy, youâre also more likely to think before you act, clearly forming your ideas and plans before setting anything in motion. This gives people a form of stability and makes you more desirable because it builds that trust. Shy people also know how to problem solve on their own. Not saying this trait is exclusive to shy people, itâs a trait a lot of great workers have, but if weâre rolling with the stereotype, shy introverts internalize. Internalizing isnât always the best practice, but shyer people tend to develop an easier ability to overcome obstacles; especially if youâve fought against your own shyness. Remember your own values. Itâs a hard world, and a lot of the times you will have your values and morals put to the test. So, the last piece of advice I have is to remember where you stand. Advancing your career is obviously important, especially if youâve set high standards, but donât compromise yourself for a job. Wanting to adjust to being the right fit for is also normal, but losing grasp on whatâs important to you isnât worth the negative consequences that can follow. What do you prioritize in your career? Have you set a standard for yourself yet, or are you going to wait until you decide what you want? Keeping in mind your values and planning a course of action from there is the surest way to check yourself before you wreck what youâve built up. Everything is subjective and case-by-case because personalities are fluid. Though I donât know you personally, I hope you can take away something helpful from these five pieces of advice. You will soon find that better nutrition and a good workout will improve the quality of your sleep so you will be getting more out of your eight hours.Changing Your DietStart by ruling out processed foods and ready meals. All you have to do is remove unhealthy choices from your shopping basket, and as your personal trainer will remind you, this part is essential to getting the results youâre aiming for.Of course, weâve all given into the temptation to food that is so easy to prep are.For busy people who have little time to cook from scratch as well as shoppers who just want cheap and easy fast-food on a day out, easy meals seem to be everywhere, and thatâs why itâs so difficult to escape the temptation.Take a list to the supermarket and stick to it to avoid unhealthy impulse buys ¦ source: Pixabay - StockSnapThis part of your training will require a lot of willpower, and you should bear in mind that choosing fast food over fresh food will only undo your hard work at the gym, and make it harder to achieve success in your training.Processed foods are full of chemical preservatives, added sugars and other nasty ingredients that your body will not thank you for.So, make sure you read food labels and seriously consider what you are putting into your body â" it doesnât like being poisoned!Choosing to remove these foods from your diet and cooking healthier, more natural meals will leave you feeling noticeably better in your day-to-day life as well as during your workouts.Donât feel bad about spending a bit of extra time at the supermarket to find out about healthier options â" just enjoy your continuing education about what is right for your body!Increase Protein IntakeIf youâve asked your coach to help you lose fat and gain muscle mass, youâll be advised to try and eat more protein.Regardless of your goals, upping your intake of protein can be beneficial as it helps repair your muscle tissue following a workout, as well as aiding general recovery.Eating chicken and turkey is particularly good for athletes, as they are rich in protein and low in fat. Fish and pulses are also good options.Meat can be quite expensive, so your coach will help you with finding good sources of protein that are within your budget and taste great!Reduce Your Intake of Sugary and Fatty FoodsThis is another key point for personal fitness training. We always hear about the dangers of sugar and fat in the media, but how harmful are they really? And what ca n you do to avoid them? Your personal trainer will be able to clarify this for you by explaining why certain foods are unhealthy.Youâll find out that some sugars are your worst enemy â" so you shouldnât eat sweets, but this doesnât mean you have to avoid fruit! The science behind sugar and exactly why itâs bad for weight loss will all become clear once you begin your training programme.Itâs the same case for fatty foods.
